FREEDOM

The overwhelming majority of Ireland’s politicians supported the Treaty of Lisbon, named after the city where the charter was signed by all member governments in December 2007. But they found it impossible to sell.

CONTROL

Gov. Ed Rendell on Friday signed into law a statewide smoking ban that will forbid people from lighting up in most bars, restaurants, workplaces and other public areas. But it is unclear who will enforce the law and how.

CALL

The Czech president, elected to a second five-year term in February, met yesterday with Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and will see Vice President Dick Cheney today, where among other issues, he will discuss a U.S. plan to stage a radar in the Czech Republic.

Klaus, an economist, said he opposed the “climate alarmism” perpetuated by environmentalism trying to impose their ideals, comparing it to the decades of communist rule he experienced growing up in Soviet-dominated Czechoslovakia.

“Like their (communist) predecessors, they will be certain that they have the right to sacrifice man and his freedom to make their idea reality,” he said. “In the past, it was in the name of the Marxists or of the proletariat — this time, in the name of the planet,” he said.

RESPONSE

Paul, a Green Tree native, surprised most of the political establishment by raising about $35 million, mostly via the Internet. Paul’s Libertarian-leaning views created a following across a broad political spectrum.

Jerry Shuster, a political communications expert at the University of Pittsburgh, said Paul’s timing for the event is likely to put him in a media spotlight during at least one day of the convention.

The crown prince of Dubai has quietly established an office in Pittsburgh to serve as his multibillion-dollar firm’s headquarters in North and South America.Dubai Investment Group’s office Downtown, which opened in April, is its second in North America, following one in Manhattan that invests strictly in real estate.

PPG Industries Inc., said Thursday it plans to build an automotive coatings and industrial coatings plant near Moscow, its first manufacturing plant in Russia.Pittsburgh-based PPG said it signed an investment agreement with the administration of Russia’s Kaluga region, where the plant will be built about 45 miles southwest of Moscow. PPG did not release the amount of the investment.
